Liverpool Set To Miss Out On Serie A Youngster Gaston Ramirez

Another target to snub Reds.

Napoli have tabled an offer for Liverpool target Gaston Ramirez, according to reports in Italy.

Midfielder Ramirez, who is also on the radar of Liverpool, Manchester City and Juventus, is expected to leave Bologna this summer after the club president Albano Guaraldi slapped a £16m price-tag on the midfielder’s head.

The 21-year-old, an international for Uruguay, notched eight goals and four assists last season as he helped Bologna toward a ninth-place finish in Serie A.

And it appears as though Napoli have stolen a march on their rivals in the race to secure Ramirez’s signature.

Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claims Napoli have offered £7.9m and two players, Ignacio Fideleff and Marco Donadel, for the Uruguay international.

It will not be a happy start for Brendan Rogers at Anfield if, as the source suggests, he misses out on a second attacking midfield target in a fortnight.

Last week, Gylfi Sigurdsson embarrassingly snubbed the chance to be reunited with Rogers, who he worked with at both Reading and Swansea, to join Andre Villas-Boas’ revolution at Tottenham.

It now looks as though Gaston Ramirez is set to follow suit, with Napoli closing in on the 21-year-old.

Sigurdsson and Ramirez share many similar qualities, including the ability to score goals from midfield, shoot from distance and take set pieces, suggesting that Rogers is seeking a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard this summer. Given the England captain’s sterling performances at Euro 2012, this may not be a priority but it is still a worrying sign of the times for the new Reds boss.

Rogers admitted yesterday that he didn’t have ‘wheelbarrow load’ of money to spend and other clubs seem to be able to offer higher wages and transfer fees than Liverpool. It seems that Liverpool’s American owners the Fenway Sports Group have significantly tightened the purse strings, after Kenny Dalglish splashed out on a number of expensive flops and Rogers may have to more a touch more cunning in the transfer market if he is to rebuild this Reds team.
