Barcelona Preparing Surprise £8m Bid For Newcastle United Midfielder Yohan Cabaye

Barcelona are preparing a shock bid for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye, reports the Sun.

With Javier Mascherano set to spend more time at centre-back, new Barca boss Tito Vilanova wants to add depth to his midfield and has identified Cabaye, and his French teammates Yann M’Vila, as potential transfer targets.

The Catalans failed in a bid to re-sign Manchester City star Yaya Toure and have now turned their attentions to the more attainable French pair.

Former Lille midfielder Cabaye stood out in his debut season on Tyneside before impressing for France at Euro 2012.

Barcelona are prepared to open the bidding at £8 million for the 26-year-old but Newcastle are understood to be reluctant to sell the playmaker for any price.

Toon boss Alan Pardew fears that interest from the La Liga giants will leave Cabaye unsettled, however.

Barca have identified M’Vila as an alternative if Newcastle prove too stubborn. The Rennes enforcer was on the verge of a switch to Arsenal last month but the move broke down after he was involved in a dressing room spat with his French teammates in Poland and Ukraine.
