Real Madrid’s £40m offer for Luka Modric paves way for Joao Moutinho’s move to Tottenham Hotspur
Real Madrid have bid more than £40 million to sign Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur, paving the way for the midfielder to finally leave.
Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also attempting to sign the 26-year-old Croatia international but it is understood that a deal could be struck with Real in the next few days.
Real had cooled their interest, after an inquiry earlier this summer, in which they had offered cash plus Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin but talks are understood to have resumed over a straight cash offer.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been quoting an asking price of £50 million for Modric but the Real offer is expected to be the best one he will receive with the player preferring to move to Spain rather than join PSG.
Previous bids from Real Madrid for Luka Modric are believed to have been in the region of £32m but this increased offer may well hit the spot as Tottenham have already relented and publicly stated their intention to sell the want-away star. New White Hart Lane boss Andre Villas-Boas arrived at the club full in the knowledge that the Croatian international wanted out and has therefore set about looking to replace the player.
This source states that the man Villas-Boas has in mind for the job is Portuguese international Joao Moutinho, a player he knows well from his time in charge at FC Porto.
Modric’s sale may be easier for chairman Daniel Levy to swallow, having successfully prevented the 26 year old from moving to Chelsea last summer, as Gareth Bale has committed to the North London club by signing a new four year contract.
Villas-Boas has already brought in Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen from Hoffenheim and Ajax respectively.
