Newcastle United Set to £7m Deal to Sign French International Mathieu Debuchy

St James’ Park side close in on Lille defender.

Sky Sports sources understand Newcastle United are close to sealing a deal for France international Mathieu Debuchy.

The Magpies targeted the Lille defender ahead of Euro 2012 and, following his impressive showing in Poland and Ukraine, made a bid which was rejected.

Italian giants Inter Milan also saw a bid rejected, and as recently as this week Lille stated they hoped to agree a new deal with the 26-year-old.

However, Newcastle have re-opened talks in the last 48 hours and are now close to coming to an agreement on a deal worth around £7million.

Alan Pardew has been chasing Mathieu Debuchy for some time now but the Lille full-back’s efforts at the Euro 2012 finals appear to have brought him to the attention of a few other interested parties. The 26 year old French international performed admirably despite Laurent Blanc’s side limping out at the Quarter Final stage.

Debuchy is set to be the latest to leave Lille with Stade Metropole boss Rudi Garcia having already lost Yohan Cabaye, Gervinho, Moussa Sow and Eden Hazard over the past 18 months.

Indeed Newcastle United’s efforts to land Debuchy may well have been aided by the fact that his former team-mate Cabaye is already at St James’ Park and seen his career progress over the past year, culminating in a regular spot in the French national team starting eleven.

Pardew is keen to land the impressive one club man as Danny Simpson is set to leave St James’ Park having not agreed a new deal with just 12 months to run on his current contract and a move to Reading is reportedly set to be completed.
