So the Royals appear to have secured another great summer capture. Brian McDermott has already brought in Garath McCleary, Danny Guthrie, Nicky Shorey and Pavel Pogrebnyak and clearly feels the need to further boost his squad following their promotion to the Premier League.

The Reading boss apparently received a glowing reference from new signing Danny Guthrie and has handed Simpson a three-year deal worth in the region of £30,000 a week.

Alan Pardew has spent the summer tracking a replacement for the Magpies man and looks very keen on French international Mathieu Debuchy.
