Arsenal Hopeful Robin Van Persie Will Perform U-Turn and Sign New £130k a Week Contract

Emirates Stadium skipper to stick with North London club?

EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal hopeful captain Van Persie will do ‘a Rooney’ and stay

Arsenal will head into next week’s make-or-break talks with Robin van Persie hopeful the contract rebel is ready to perform a Wayne Rooney-style U-turn.

The Gunners skipper stunned the club earlier this month with a damning statement questioning the club’s ambition whilst confirming his intention not to sign a new contract.

Van Persie is due to return to pre-season training next week and manager Arsene Wenger will take the opportunity to hold a heart-to-heart with his talisman in hope that he can persuade the 28-year-old to change his mind.

And a well-placed Arsenal source has told Sportsmail that the club are still ‘very hopeful’ of securing the long term future of Van Persie.

So will Robin Van Persie have a change of heart? Given that the Dutch international made a public statement revealing his intention to leave Arsenal it would have to be a fairly big ‘change of heart’ to convince the 28 year old to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Even though Arsenal are ready to offer £130k a week contract and a £5m loyalty bonus, it’s clear that Van Persie can command a far bigger salary at a number of club’s said to have an interest in his services, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Man City to name just three.

The arrival of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud may well have had the effect of convincing Van Persie that Arsenal were at least moving in the right direction. Perhaps the addition of another top quality player or two would further prove that the North London club have the ambition to challenge for major honours again.

Clearly Wenger would love to keep hold of the goal machine but a U-Turn is still a long shot and the fact still remains that Arsenal will need to make a decision about whether they would accept offers for Van Persie this summer rather than losing the former Feyenoord man for nothing in a year’s time.
