Sunderland Line Up Move for £15m Pair: Black Cats Target Tottenham & Wolves Strike Duo

Stadium of Light side line up double striker swoop.

Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill is ready to make his move for Wolves’ £10million-rated striker Steven Fletcher.

The Black Cats boss now has the go-ahead from chairman Ellis Short to bid for the Scot, following the completion of Asamoah Gyan’s permanent switch to UAE outfit Al Ain .

TOTTENHAM outcast Jermain Defoe is a wanted man – after two more teams joined the race to sign the out of favour hitman.

Reading’s audacious £5million swoop for the England striker, 29, is already under threat with Sunderland and Stoke poised to start a new bidding war.

Defoe looks certain to be surplus to requirements under new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas and is resigned to the fact his future lies elsewhere.

Premier League rivals Sunderland and Stoke were soon alerted that Defoe was on the market.

Sunderland have been fairly quiet in the transfer market thus far, their only notable acquisition being that of out of contract Spaniard Carlos Cuellar, but it seems that Martin O’Neill does have his eyes on signings he feels will resolve the Black Cats main problem area, namely their attack.

Having permanently offloaded Asamoah Gyan, and passed on the possibility of signing Nicklas Bendtner on a permanent basis, O’Neill doesn’t have all that much in the way of effective striking options. In fact even the players he does have; Frazier Campbell, Connor Wickham and Ji Dong-Won, do not exactly inspire confidence, hence the need to invest in fresh firepower.

Quite why Wolves striker Steven Fletcher should be worth twice as much as Jermain Defoe is beyond me, but that said both players would greatly improve things at Sunderland.

Scottish international Fletcher netted an impressive 12 goals in 26 Premier League starts last term, this despite the fact that his Molineux side finished rock bottom. Tottenham forward Defoe is a proven goalscorer with over 200 goals for club and country and if Andre Villas-Boas does indeed look to consider offers for the England man perhaps he would be tempted by the possibility of regular first team football at the Stadium of Light.
