Duo to do battle for Colombian.
Tottenham Hotspur have made an ambitious approach to sign Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao but the North London side will face competition from Manchester United.
Spurs have made contact with the Spaniards and hope to take advantage of Atletico’s precarious financial situation to broker a deal for the Colombian.
Falcao has established himself as one of the most talented strikers in Europe in the past two seasons and helped Atletico lift the Europa League last term, scoring a stunning brace in their 3-0 win over Atheltic Bilbao in the Final.
The former River Plate striker is coveted by a number of European giants but new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas is confident he can persuade Falcao to join him at White Hart Lane.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is hopeful of securing a cut-price deal for Falcao because Athletico are struggling financially and still owe the Colombian’s former club Porto a portion of his transfer fee. Spurs are also willing to throw want-away winger Gio dos Santos into any deal as a makeweight.
Villas-Boas knows Falcao well after managing him at Porto and believes he would instantly transform Tottenham into genuine title contenders.
The 34-year-old tactician is set to welcome Emmanuel Adebayor back to White Hart Lane this week but is prepared to sell England striker Jermain Defoe, as well as Luka Modric.
Manchester United are monitoring the situation and will attempt to match any deal agreed between Tottenham and the Madrid club, with the Vicente Calderon club reportedly demanding up to £30 million for their prize asset.
