Former Chelsea Defender Ricardo Carvalho Nears Tottenham Switch

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing former Chelsea centre-half Ricardo Carvalho from Real Madrid, reports talkSPORT.

The 34-year-old managed just 8 appearances for the Spanish Champions last season and is deemed surplus to requirements at the Bernebeu by boss Jose Mourinho.

New Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas worked with Carvalho under Mourinho at Chelsea and is a huge admirer of the Portuguese veteran.

Villas-Boas is keen to add some experience to his back-line, with the future of Ledley King and William Gallas in doubt, and has instructed chairman Daniel Levy to conclude a deal for Carvalho as soon as possible.

The former Porto defender spent six years at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League title three times, before joining Mourinho at Real in 2010.

Real are currently in negotiations with Spurs over the transfer of Luka Modric to the Bernebeu but it is understood that the Londoners are keen to keep the deals separate.

Spurs wanted Nuri Sahin plus cash for the Croatian schemer but it is understood that the Turkish midfielder would rather stay in Spain, leading Spurs to tell Real that Modric will cost an up-front £35 million.
