Real Madrid Consider Bid for Man City Defender Micah Richards

Jose Mourinho wants Etihad Stadium star.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are considering a bid for Manchester City defender Micah Richards, according to reports in the Spanish media.

Barcelona-based paper Sport has revealed that Jose Mourinho is an admirer of the City defender, and is considering him as an alternative to 31-year-old Inter Milan full-back Maicon.

It’s thought that Maicon’s age is a concern for Madrid, particularly as they believe that Richards, 24, would be available for a similar price of €10m, and, unlike the Brazilian, the City man can also play in the centre of defence.

Sport claim that, while in principle Richards is not for sale, City’s pursuit of big name signings this summer could open the door for a Madrid bid.

Many were surprised when Micah Richards was not named in Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad, such had been his impact during Man City’s title winning campaign. The adaptable defender, who is comfortable both as centre back and right back, is a determined customer and a player with a great level of experience for a player of his age.

The 24 year old Birmingham born defender has amassed 226 club appearances and over a dozen national team caps and one can see why Jose Mourinho would be keen on signing Micah Richards.

Towards the end of last term Richards found himself consigned to the bench as Roberto Mancini opted for Argentine Pablo Zabaleta and this may well have sparked speculation that the England international could be on his way out, but that seems unlikely.

However clearly interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid may well tempt Richards who could use such talk as the basis for securing a guarantee of regular first team football next term.
