Veteran on way to Vicarage Road.
Watford’s Italian revolution is set to begin in earnest with a move for Tottenham Hotspur ‘keeper Carlo Cudicini.
The veteran will become Gianfranco Zola’s first signing at Vicarage Road after Spurs gave the 38-year-old permission to leave on a free transfer.
Cudicini is unlikely to be the most high profile ageing Italian to join the north London club this summer, with Flippo Inzaghi said to have looked round Watford’s training complex this morning, according to the Watford Observer.
Former Juventus star Alessandro del Piero has also been linked with the club, who were taken over by the Pozzo family – who promptly appointed Zola as manager – earlier this month.
Cudicini has been with Tottenham since 2009, mainly as understudy to Heurelho Gomes and Brad Friedel, but impressed last season when called upon in the Europa League and League Cup.
Previously, the custodian spent nine years with Chelsea, where he caught the eye as one of the Premier League’s most talented goalkeepers before he lost his place to the Blues current number one Petr Cech.
His departure has led to further speculation that Spurs are close to completing a deal for Lyon ‘keeper Hugo Lloris.
Andre Villas-Boas wants the France captain to replace 41-year-old Friedel but saw a £13 million bid rejected last week, with the Ligue 1 club holding out for £16 million.
