Arsenal Set 48 Hour Deadline to Clarify Robin Van Persie’s Future

Emirates Stadium side want issue resolved before club fly out for Asian tour.

Wenger tells wantaway captain Van Persie his future must be sorted by Saturday

Arsenal want the Robin van Persie affair resolved in the next 48 hours as Arsene Wenger prepares to talk publicly about the saga for the first time.

Club sources have confirmed that the captain will hold talks with manager Wenger either on Wednesday or Thursday in an attempt to clarify the contract stand-off that is threatening to overshadow their pre-season tour of Asia which begins on Saturday.

Wenger knows he will have to speak about the issue at his first pre-season press conference when the club arrive in Malaysia this weekend.

As it stands, Arsenal are resolved to including Van Persie in the trip, but if it becomes clear there is no chance of him signing a new contract then Sportsmail understands the 28-year-old may not go.

The situation is so delicate the Gunners are willing to wait until the morning of the flight to decide whether Van Persie should travel — and if he doesn’t it would surely be the end of his career at the club.

One wonders just how one sided such a conversation will be, after all Robin Van Persie has publicly stated he doesn’t intend to sign a new Arsenal contract so the ball is very much back in the North London club’s court. Either they relent and sell the Dutch striker this summer or hold on to the 28 year old for another year and lose him for nothing. Simple as that really.

Arsene Wenger will of course try to persuade his skipper to stay but now that the Arsenal striker has made it very clear he wants to leave it would be hard to imagine a scenario where he would back-track from that position.

Last term Van Persie came to the fore, netting 37 goals in all competitions, but after eight seasons with just one FA Cup triumph to show for it, it does seem that the former Feyenoord man is ready to move on and that decision, whilst clearly angering both the club and their supporters, is not all that surprising given the circumstances.

If the Gunners elect to keep a player who has stated he wants out then they may well see Van Persie’s form suffer and then the point of keeping him for another year becomes somewhat pointless.

No doubt Arsenal fans will be keeping their eyes peeled to see if Van Persie is going up the steps to board the plane that takes the Premier League side to start their Asian tour.
