Hammers land Malian.
West Ham have confirmed the signing of Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga on a four-year deal.
Hammers Chairman David Gold made the unusual step of taking to twitter to announce the news.
The Malian forward can play as a striker or winger and has been with the Ligue 1 side since 2010. He scored 24 league goals in France last season.
Maiga was coveted by Newcastle United in January and the Toon reportedly agreed a £7 million fee with Sochaux. But the deal broke down after the Maiga failed a medical at St James’ Park.
The striker is a Mal international and has 24 caps for the national team but has often played on the wing and only has one goal to his name for the The Eagles.
Maiga’s arrival may well end the Hammers’ pursuit of Liverpool forward Andy Carroll. West Ham boss Sam Allardyce wanted to bring in the Geordie powerhouse on loan but the 23-year-old is expected to join Newcastle.
