Stamford Bridge side chase another Samba star.
Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu has claimed that the club have rejected a €34 million (£26m) bid from Chelsea for talented Brazilian playmaker Willian.
Equally comfortable on the wing or in attacking midfield, Willian signed for the Miners as an inexperienced and inconsistent 19-year-old after an impressive start to his career with Corinthians and, although his debut season included prolonged periods on the bench, he has since gone on to become an integral part of the first team.
The Brazil international was the subject of concrete interest from Chelsea in January, and his boss admitted that the attacker would be allowed to leave if price is right.
Lucescu told Romanian TV station Dolce Sport: “I told Willian he can leave, but only if the right offer is made.”
Are Chelsea really trying to sign another attacking midfielder?
On the same morning that Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan – a questionable source, we should add – claimed that he had rejected a third Chelsea bid for winger Victor Moses, Shakhtar coach Lucescu has suggested the Blues bid £26 million for Willian.
The two offers are particularly surprising given that the European Champions are reportedly on the verge on sealing a £25 million deal for Internacional’s playmaker Oscar, and have already signed Eden Hazard, Marko Marin and Kevin de Bruyne this summer.
It seems that attacking midfield starting spots are going to be at a premium at Stamford Bridge next season, particularly with Ramires and Juan Mata already on their books and Frank Lampard showing no signs of abating.
Dare we suggest that Chelsea weren’t too bad going forward last year but it was at the back, with an ageing John Terry and erratic David Luiz, that they looked vulnerable. With Branislav Ivanovic currently the club’s only competent right-back, Roman Abramovic’s millions may be better spent addressing the defence, rather than trying to sign every winger under the sun.
