Sains win race for defender.
Southampton have won the race for Crystal Palace star Nathaniel Clyne and will complete a move for the 19-year-old in the next 24 hours, reports the Daily Mirror.
The highly-rated youngster has attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs including Newcastle and Reading but has agreed a four-year deal at St Mary’s.
Clyne, who has 2 caps for England under-21 side, took to twitter to break the news.
“First and full most, I would like to say a big thank you to the palace fans, for all your support since Ive been here,” the right-back tweeted.
“Its a great club and I’ve enjoyed every minute, but now I look forward to a new challenge.”
It is understood that a contract is not yet signed but Clyne is expected to be confirmed as a Southampton player in the next 24 hours.
The youngster has been a regular in the Palace first team since 2008/9 season, making his debut in a 3-0 win over Barnsley.
He won the club’s player of the year award last season, after growing into one of the most important players at Selhurst Park.
Southampton will be forced to pay Palace compensation because, although Clyne was out of contract, he is under the age of 24.
