Zenit Confirm Interest In Signing Arsenal Winger Andrei Arshavin

Russian champions want Emirates Stadium attacker.

Spalletti confirms Zenit interest in Arsenal midfielder Arshavin

Luciano Spalletti has revealed that he would be interested in taking Arsenal misfit Andrey Arshavin back to Zenit St Petersburg following a successful spell at the club last season.

The 31-year-old fell out of favour at the Emirates Stadium in the first half of last season and was subsequently shipped out to his former side for the rest of campaign in a bid to secure a place in Russia’s squad for Euro 2012.

Arshavin impressed during his spell back home, scoring three times in 10 appearances, and Spalletti has since conceded the attacker forms part of his transfer wishlist ahead of the new season, which starts on Saturday.

“We will buy players,” the Italian coach told Zenit’s official website. “In my opinion Arshavin is a player of real class and, in addition, he is an intelligent man. It all depends on what his motivation is.

“I have little doubt about Arshavin. I’m sure if he came back, he would play as well as last season. He is one of the names that we have discussed.”

Andrei Arshavin may well feel that the time is right to leave Arsenal on a permanent basis having impressed during his loan return to former club Zenit St Petersburg, but any potential move back to Russia will depend greatly on just how much the Gunners are looking to recoup from the sale of a player who cost a club record £15m two and a half years ago.

In truth the 31 year old has never come close to justifying the money spent on his services, though as a player he promised so much following a majestic run of form during the Euro 2008 finals. Bar a four goal blitz at Anfield and the occasional bit of trickery here and there Arsenal fans will probably remember Arshavin more for his ability to vanish during matches and his penchant for not chasing back and on occasion standing on the byline shrugging his shoulders.

Arshavin clearly has the talent but his attitude has been called into question on many occasions and Wenger appears ready to allow the attacker to leave this summer.

Andrei Arshavin has made 135 appearances for the North London club, scoring 30 goals in the process.
