Napoli star Edinson Cavani is a target for Manchester City and Chelsea

MANCHESTER CITY and Chelsea are in a bidding war for Napoli’s Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani, which has already reached £30million.

Of the two sides chasing Napoli forward Edinson Cavani, one could well do with the boost of some extra firepower and the other is Man City.

One can see why Roberto Di Matteo and Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich would be very keen on landing the Uruguayan international, who has netted 66 goals in two seasons in Naples, after all Didier Drogba has left the club and first choice striker Fernando Torres is still yet to justify even a fraction of the £50m spend to bring him from Anfield to Stamford Bridge.

However, why would Man City need to invest £30m on a new striker? Does Roberto Mancini just had an insatiable appetite to spend? His Etihad Stadium side netted 93 goals in 38 Premier League matches last term. Three of their strikers finished in the top ten list of goalscorers.

Even if Mancini felt he has to sell either Carlos Tevez or Edin Dzeko, who for differing reasons may not be needed or wanted by the club, the Italian still has Argentine hit-man Sergio Aguero and in-form youngster Mario Balotelli vying for first team duties.

Any move to sign Cavani would surely just be an exercise in flexing the club’s financial muscle. Whilst there may well be a possible need to strengthen some areas of the Man City squad then the club’s strike-force is certainly not an area that needs that level of investment, not least because the club also has some talented youngsters coming through, most notably Swede John Guidetti.
