Reading boss Brian McDermott has been very successful in the current transfer window thus far and has not set his sights on further improving his Royals strike-force with a move for former fans favourite Shane Long. West Brom turned down the initial offer from the newly promoted side so any new offer may well have to be significantly increased if they are to persuade Steve Clarke to sell the 25 year old.
The Irish international left the Majedski Stadium a year ago and had a fairly successful first team at the Hawthorns, netting eight Premier League goals with some of those coming against the toughest sides in the top tier. The former Cork City man getting on the score-sheet against Man United, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Arsenal during the last campaign.
Though McDermott has already strengthened his attack with the signing of big Russian Pavel Pogrebnyak he clearly still feels he could do with other options up front.
Long made 203 appearances for Reading between 2005 and 2011, of which 83 came from the bench, and the speedy striker netted 54 goals in the process.
