Newcastle United to Challenge Tottenham For Real Madrid Centre Back

Pardew alerted to Carvalho tour absence.

Newcastle are ready to challenge Tottenham for the signature of Real Madrid stopper Ricardo Carvalho.

The Portuguese veteran was left out of Real Madrid’s squad for their pre-season tour of the US and now looks set to leave the Spanish capital this summer.

The 34-year-old made just eight appearances at the Bernebeu last season but is not ready to hang up his boots, despite suggestions he could turn to coaching.

It is understood that Spurs new boss Andre Villas-Boas is interested in the experienced 34-year-old after losing Ledley King to retirement and Ryan Nelsen to QPR.

Real wanted to use Carvalho as part of a deal for Luka Modric but Spurs want straight £40 million deal for the Croatian schemer.

Newcastle are also interested and are ready to make a concrete offer this week. Boss Alan Pardew wants to add more depth to his Toon squad and believes Carvalho’s experience will be vital as Newcastle eye another assault on the top four this season.

The Magpies are also hopeful of tying-up a deal for Lille right-back Mathieu Debuchy this week.
