Emmanuel Adebayor Latest: Striker Threatens To Pull Plug On Tottenham Move To ‘Punish’ Manchester City

Striker wants to pocket £4m fee.

Emmanuel Adebayor has threatened to pull out of a move to Tottenham unless he is directly handed the £4 million transfer fee that has been agreed with Tottenham.

It is understood that City have agreed to subsidise his wages if he moves to White Hart Lane, meaning the 28-year-old will continue to earn £170,000 a week – with Spurs contributing just £100,000.

Goal.com reports that the transfer fee to take Adebayor back to north London, where he spent last season on a successful loan spell, has been lowered to just £4 million.

But the former Arsenal striker has told City he wants to be handed the entire transfer fee, which would effectively see him leave Eastlands on a free transfer.

“He wants to punish Manchester City for how he thinks they have treated him,” said a source close to the player. “He wants a free transfer and has told them that if he doesn’t get it he will stay at Manchester City for two more years.”

Tottenham are desperate for the situation to reach a speedy resolution and are currently without a single senior striker for their pre-season tour of the USA, after Jermain Defoe flew home following a family bereavement.

Another source, Phil Smith, the agent who took Adebayor to City in a £25 million deal from Arsenal in 2009 has revealed that the stubborn striker will do whatever it takes to get his own way.

“I was involved in Adebayor going to Manchester City from Arsenal and he is quite ruthless when it comes to getting what he wants,” Smith said.

“He got a very good deal and quite clearly he wants his pound of flesh, not only on the way in but on the way out.

“And I think it’s a deal that will die on its backside. Who is it that is going to come and give moneybags Adebayor the money that he wants other than moneybags QPR and I don’t think they’d even be interested in him.”

City could be faced with the striker remaining on their books for the remaining two years of his current deal.

The Premier League Champions are desperate to offload the Togo international to free up wages for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

Adebayor impressed last season on loan at White Hart Lane, scoring 17 times and bringing out the best in Spurs talented midfield with his hold-up play and intelligent running.
