Spurs eye Portuguese star.
Tottenham are tracking Porto winger Silvestre Varela after losing interest in Marseilles’ Loic Remy.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas worked with Varela at the Portuguese club and is keen to be reunited with the 27-year-old, who can operate on either wing or as an auxiliary striker.
AVB is keen to adopt a 4-3-3 system next season and wants a powerful centre-forward to be supported by two goal-scoring wingers. The 34-year-old tactician is confident Varela can adapt to the Premier League and fit into his preferred style of play.
Spurs have lost interest in Marseilles forward Loic Remy after learning that the Ligue 1 outfit value the French international at £15 million and believe Varela is a more cost effective option.
Varela was a regular under AVB at Porto and impressed with his ability to score and create but the star has lost his place under new boss Vitor Perreira and would welcome a reunion with his old mentor in north London.
Varela has just 9 caps for his country but was part of Portugal’s Euro 2012 squad and impressed, scoring a stunning late winner in the semi-finalists’ 3-2 win over Denmark in the group stage.
Meanwhile, Joao Moutinho remains Tottenham’s number one choice to replace want-away midfielder Luka Modric but Spurs are unwilling to pay Porto’s £30 million asking price.
