Arsenal Set to Make Offer for Man City Midfielder

Emirates Stadium boss sets sights on Dutch international.

Arsenal will reportedly make an exploratory approach for Man City midfielder Nigel De Jong as Arsene Wenger looks to add extra steel to his Gunners midfield. The Emirates Stadium boss has spent much of the summer chasing Rennes youngster Yann M’Vila without success and has now turned his attention to the Dutch international enforcer.

27 year old midfielder De Jong found himself something of a bit part player at Man City last term, being restricted to just 11 Premier League starts in contrast to the 30 he managed in the previous two campaigns, and Roberto Mancini may well be willing to listen to offers for the former Hamburg man as the big spending club look to balance the books with an eye to UEFA’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) guidelines.

Mancini elected to adopt a less defensively minded approach last term, opting to partner Gareth Barry with Yaya Toure as opposed to utilizing all three in his starting eleven, this helped to make Man City a far more effective attacking unit which helped the Etihad Stadium side secure the Premier League title.

Arsene Wenger is looking to bring in an out and out defensive midfielder having seen Alex Song become more of a rounded player over the past year.

The Cameroon international become less of a defensive force last term and whilst clearly his 14 assists last term greatly aided the North London club Wenger is looking to bring in a tough tackling presence to help protect his more creative midfielders.

There is also talk of a possible Barcelona bid for Song and Wenger may well feel that youngster Emmanuel Frimpong is not ready to cement a regular first team slot this coming season.

Arsenal have of course sold a number of players to Man City in recent seasons and Wenger is now keen to buck that trend by attempting to lure De Jong to the Emirates Stadium.
