Arsenal Boss Tempted to Sell £15m Star Whilst Plotting Real Madrid Raid

Emirates Stadium boss draws up replacement plan.

Arsène Wenger intent on Nuri Sahin pursuit if Alex Song leaves Arsenal

Arsène Wenger tempted to sell Alex Song for £15m plus

Arsène Wenger intends to push ahead with his move for the Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin only if Alex Song were to leave Arsenal. The manager, who was finally able to announce the signing of Santi Cazorla from Malaga on Tuesday morning, has grown irritated with Song over the midfielder’s desire to explore his transfer market options.

Wenger has pursued Sahin and there has been a confidence behind the scenes at Arsenal that the Turkey midfielder is attainable, initially on a season-long loan. José Mourinho, the Madrid manager, said last week that he would not stand in the player’s way if he wanted to join Arsenal.

But Wenger appears to have lined up Sahin as a contingency in the event of Song’s departure. Song is aware that a clutch of Europe’s leading clubs, including Barcelona, have made enquiries about him, on the back of his encouraging season last time out, when he developed the more creative side of his game and he wants to listen to what they have to offer.

There have been no firm bids as yet but Wenger has come to consider the merits of selling Song for £15m or more, particularly if he could bring in Sahin to retain his numbers in midfield.

This source believes that Arsene Wenger may consider selling Alex Song, for the right price, and if that is the case then a move for Nuri Sahin would be a wise one but would still leave Arsenal without much in the way of a steely presence as the Real Madrid is clearly not a like for like replacement for the Cameroonian international.

Turkish international is desperate to secure first team football for the coming campaign and currently anywhere besides the Bernabeu would increases the chances of that happening. The 23 year old moved to the La Liga giants a year ago after helping Borussia Dortmund to the title in 2010/11 but has barely made an impact at Real Madrid since.

Alex Song’s progress from enforcer to attack minded midfielder has in some ways come at a price. Yes the Arsenal man is now a very useful weapon going forward, the 25 year old accruing 14 assists last term, but this has also led to the former Bastia man seemingly being less able to do the ‘dirty work’ and he was found wanting in terms of defensive duties last term.

Barcelona’s interest may well excite Song and if a bid is registered it may prove tough to prevent the Gunners midfielder from having head turned which could in turn either lead to a drop in form, a transfer request and inevitably a sale. Therefore it makes sense for Wenger to look at alternatives to help cover the potential loss of the first team regular.
