Manchester United Set to Sign Arsenal Striker Robin Van Persie Within 24 Hours According to Reports

Speculation rife that Old Trafford move is on the cards for Emirates Stadium goal machine.

Manchester United have shot into pole position in the race to sign wantaway Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.

Earlier this week Roberto Mancini virtually conceded defeat in his attempts to lure the Dutchman to City and Juventus, the other contenders in a three-way battle, are now thought to have cooled their interest after being confronted with his hefty wage demands.

That leaves the Reds at the front of the queue – and M.E.N. Sport understands van Persie could jet in to sign as early as tonight.

The targetman, who turned 29 on Sunday, was photographed training with his team-mates on Monday in Germany where the Arsenal squad are currently on tour.

They take on FC Cologne on Sunday but it is unlikely van Persie will still be a Gunners player by then.

OK so these are fairly strong words from a fairly reputable source that has contacts within Old Trafford, does this mean a deal is in the offing? Well the signs point to Arsenal preparing for the exit of the Dutchman after all they have purchased two top notch attackers in the form of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud and unless Arsene Wenger has visions of playing the pair of new additions AND Robin Van Persie it’s plausible that the Gunners boss was preparing for the inevitable.

Man United could well do with attacking alternatives. Michael Owen has been released, Dimitar Berbatov is not happy and wants to leave and Javier Hernandez has lost his spark. The idea of partnering the Arsenal skipper and Wayne Rooney up front may well have piqued Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest.

Arsene Wenger has been far more productive than usual in this transfer window and one has to wonder if this has been the case because the Frenchman was aware that he would lose his captain and had to therefore appease supporters who have already had to endure a seven season long silverware drought.

The arrival of Santi Cazorla earlier in the week perhaps helps to prove that Arsenal are able, and willing, to spend relatively large sums in the pursuit of long awaited success. However the Gunners fans may well be exasperated by the potential loss of their mercurial marksman and wonder what the future holds for a side who are some way of the title pace.
