Swansea City Linked With Move for Newcastle United Winger Gabriel Obertan

Liberty Stadium side keen on St James’ Park wide-man.

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup is reluctant to be drawn into a debate regarding transfer targets, but has refused to rule out a move for Gabriel Obertan.

The Newcastle winger is said to figure prominently on the Swans’ summer shopping list.

Obertan only linked up with Newcastle last summer, penning a five-year contract.

It has been suggested that the Magpies may be willing to listen to offers for the former Manchester United player.

It’s fair to say that the move that was meant to kick-start Gabriel Obertan’s career has failed to do so. The French international moved to St James’ Park after two very average years at Man United only to lose his first team place to rejuvenated winger Hatem Ben Arfa. A move to the Liberty Stadium may indeed offer the former Bordeaux man a better chance of securing regular first team football.

Obertan has made just two Premier League starts since the turn of the year and Micheal Laudrup may well be keen to bring in the 23 year old to offer his Swans side more of a cutting edge up front.

Last term much of Brendan Rodgers success was underpinned by solid defensive displays, which is not to say that Swansea City don’t have effective attacking options but the Welsh side could certainly do with more strength in depth.

Rodgers employed a three pronged attack, with an attacking midfielder operating in the hole behind the striker, for the second half of last term this spot was taken by Gyfli Sigurdsson with Danny Graham up front with Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer being used on the flanks.

Clearly any interest in Obertan will lead some to believe that either Sinclair or Dyer are set for a Swansea City exit however it could well just be a sign that Laudrup realises the importance of beefing up numbers for the coming campaign, keen to build on last term’s solid 11th place finish.
