Liverpool Close In On Solid La Liga Centre Back as Potential Repacement for Daniel Agger

Anfield side keen on Atletico Madrid defender.

The 26-year-old Uruguay international has been on Liverpool’s radar for two years. They have decided in the past that he wasn’t right for them but the growing unrest over Daniel Agger’s situation has made them reconsider.

Godin is uncompromising, quick and decent on the ball. He is not a towering physical presence but sticks to his task of defending.

He also shares the same agent as Liverpool’s Sebastian Coates and is available at a decent price as Atletico Madrid are struggling financially.

Liverpool want close to £30m for Daniel Agger should they agree to sell. As Sportsmail revealed, Adam Johnson has been discussed as part of talks with Man City but they may switch targets due to Liverpool’s valuation of the 27-year-old. That may then put pressure on Agger to see whether he demands a move. Barcelona are keeping a watching brief and Liverpool’s interest in Cristian Tello may tee up a similar deal there.

If indeed Liverpool do opt to cash in on Daniel Agger, and that only seems likely if Man City offer a huge sum for the Dane, then a move for Diego Godin would be a very wise one to consider.

The chance to join his fellow Uruguayan team-mates Sebastian Coates and Luis Suarez may well be an extra pull for the 26 year old defender and arguably even if Agger was to remain at Anfield the club could still do with extra defensive options.

Given Jamie Carragher’s age and Agger’s injury concerns Brendan Rodgers may wish to bring in an extra centre-back so could still look to land the Atletico Madrid man regardless of whether Man City up their offer.

Godin is a no-nonsense defender who has performed admirably in La Liga, first for three years at Villarreal and then for the past two years at the Vicente Calderon.

Rodgers has made just one signing thus far this summer, that of Italian striker Fabio Borini, and having offloaded Dirk Kuyt, Maxi Rodriguez and Alberto Aquilani the Liverpool boss will almost certainly be looking to conduct some business before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.
