Man United to Launch Surprise Bid for Tottenham Midfielder Luka Modric

Old Trafford side re-ignite interest in White Hart Lane schemer.

Manchester United are considering re-entering the race to sign Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric. Sir Alex Ferguson has pursued the Croatian international earlier in the transfer window but his interested appeared to grow cold when Real Madrid showed an interest in the 26 year old midfielder but now the Scot is reportedly readying an offer for the White Hart Lane star.

Modric has stated his intention to leave Tottenham and Jose Mourinho’s side have lodged unsuccessful bids for the former Dinamo Zagreb man who has now returned to his North London club after missing most of the pre-season action.

Whilst Andre Villas-Boas would clearly like to welcome Modric back it may prove disruptive to retain a player who has made it clear he wishes to leave and therefore Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy may need to re-think his demands in terms of an asking price for the midfielder.

Ferguson is still looking to bring in a fresh creative midfield option and having been linked with a myriad of players he has returned to one of his early targets.

The Man United boss failed in his pursuit of Brazilian teenager Lucas Moura and knows that in order to land Modric he would have to exceed Real Madrid’s last bid, thought to be in the region of £25m, and Sir Alex Ferguson has been promised funds to make just such a bid but a lot could depend on Levy’s willingness to sell to a fellow Premier League side.

Having seen his Old Trafford side lose their Premier League crown to local rivals Man City and watched as his side crashed out of the Champions League at the first hurdle Ferguson is still keen to improve his squad and feels his midfield is in need of improvement, with a number of those available to him either nearing the end of their careers or failing to make as much of an impact as he would’ve hoped.

Ferguson will hope that Modric is interested in a move to Man United having seemingly had his heart set on a move to Real Madrid.
