Manchester United Midfielder Michael Carrick Set For Surprise Recall To England Squad

Carrick could join Team GB stars in Hodgson’s squad.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is set for a surprise recall to the England squad for next week’s friendly with Italy.

Carrick withdrew from contention for Euro 2012 after growing frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities for Roy Hodgson’s side – but is set to return, with injuries sidelining Scott Parker, Gareth Barry and Jack Wilshere.

England coach Gary Neville has suggested that Hodgson is unlikely to select some of his more established internationals, meaning potential places for Team GB quartet Daniel Sturridge, Ryan Bertrand, Tom Cleverly and Jack Butland.

Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker who missed the Euros through injury will also be included, along with Chelsea’s veteran midfielder Frank Lampard.

Other stars who missed out of a place in the squad for Poland and Ukraine through injury, like John Ruddy or Norwich, Everton’s Jack Rodwell and Gary Cahill could also make the cut.
