Arsenal Midfielder Alex Song Agrees Barcelona Deal: Midfielder Handed Five Year Contract

Emirates Stadium star set to sign for Nou Camp side?

Barcelona are confident of taking a key midfielder from Arsenal for the second consecutive season as they prepare to open negotiations with the London club for Alex Song.

Adopting the same strategy that secured Cesc Fabregas last year, the Catalans have provisionally agreed personal terms with Song ahead of lodging a formal offer for his transfer.

This source states that the Cameroon international has agreed a five year contract worth £75k a week and now the ball is apparently in Arsenal’s court. If the Gunners midfielder has indeed shown his intention to leave the North London club then Arsene Wenger may have to decide if it’s sensible to hold on to a player who wishes to leave.

Barcelona have apparently turned to the 24 year old Arsenal man having failed to lure Athletic Bilbao’s Javi Martinez this summer and the possible capture of the battling midfielder would leave Wenger looking to bring in a replacement fairly swiftly given the new season is just over a week away.

Song has made over 200 appearances since his move to the club from Bastia in 2006, following a successful loan spell. Arsene Wenger has seen the tough tackler mature into more than just an enforcer and last term showed what he is capable of going forward by producing 14 assists, more than any other Arsenal player in 2011/12, in all competitions.

That said Song is seemingly the only effective defensive midfield option Arsenal have, with Emmanuel Frimpong still not ready for regular first team football at the Emirates Stadium. Wenger will be left looking to bring in a player who can protect his more creative talents, which seems like a much needed addition given the injuries suffered by the likes of Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey over the past 18 months.
