Man United Prepare Move for Cut-Price Duo as Sir Alex Ferguson Looks to Strengthen Old Trafford Defence

Old Trafford boss looks to land Malaga full-backs.

Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has concerns in defence ahead of the start of the season.

As revealed by Sportsmail, Phil Jones is struggling with illness and an injured back, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans are injured while Rafael is on duty with Brazil’s Olympic squad.

They need someone who can cover both full-back areas and 28-year-old Portugal international Eliseu is among the candidates.

His versatility could prove an asset to United’s squad but Monreal, who is the subject of interest from Valencia would make more sense with United’s desire for a natural left-back.

Now is the right time to try and snap up some Malaga talent. The La Liga side are suffering the after effects of a huge outlay last summer that may have earned them a spot in the Champions League but did so at a price. The La Rosaleda side’s owners are now keen to sell players to help balance the books ahead of a potential sale and therefore anyone looking to pick up a cut-price bargain would do well to consider a swoop.

Sir Alex Ferguson is apparently more than aware of this fact and this source believes that the Man United boss will look to make offers for left wing-back Eliseu and left back Nacho Monreal.

Both players are full internationals with Nacho Monreal having collected five Spanish caps. The former Osasuna man moved to Malaga in a £4.5m deal last summer and was a regular for Manuel Pellegrini’s side as they finished in fourth spot, the club’s highest ever top tier finish.

28 year old Portuguese international Eliseu is the more attacking of the pair and is in his second spell at Malaga, having Lazio and Real Zaragoza in the interim period. A set piece specialist, the former Belenenses youth team graduate would presumably be a fairly cheap addition given the fact that his first team chances were somewhat reduced following the arrival of Monreal.

Malaga have already sold Salomon Rondon and Santi Cazorla to Rubin Kazan and Arsenal respectively and are expected to have to sell more players this summer and indeed the financial predicament the club are in could prove even more calamitous if they fail to overcome Panathinaikos in the Champions League qualifier later this month.
