Manchester City Hope to Make Liverpool Defender Daniel Agger Second Summer Signing

Etihad Stadium side target Anfield man as Mancini gets the spending bug.

Roberto Mancini has splashed out £15million on Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell – but says he needs more signings this week.

Manchester City boss Mancini watched his side overhaul Chelsea in the Community Shield but still reckons he must strengthen his title-winning squad.

With Micah Richards out for a month with an ankle injury, Mancini is likely to step up his efforts to sign Liverpool defender Daniel Agger this week.

Rodwell is City’s first signing of a summer in which Mancini has made no secret of his frustration at the lack of arrivals.

And he was at it again yesterday when he said: “Every manager is unhappy when, one week before the start of the season, you haven’t bought any players.

“But I hope we are working and, this week, we can do something about this.

When Roberto Mancini is worried about having not spend enough on new players then you know the game is in an odd state of affairs. Quite how the Italian would believe that his situation is the same as other manager’s, hence his statement about ‘Every manager’ being unhappy about not making signings, is mind-boggling.

The Man City boss has spent an obscene amount constructing a squad that has two elevens that could happily challenge for major honours and still he wants more. This is despite his club having a raft of players he has no need for simply sticking around for the salary they receive.

Daniel Agger is the latest on Man City’s wish-list but the Dane may want to think long and hard about making a move to the Etihad Stadium. Yes he would be in a squad that will challenge for a Premier League, and possible Champions League, title this term but will the 27 year old secure regular first team football?

As a central defensive pairing Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott as perhaps one of the most solid partnerships in Europe so it would appear Mancini simply wants back-up options. He also has Ivorian Kolo Toure and the fairly average Stefan Savic, and of course Micah Richards who has perhaps become more well associated with the right-back slot, but now the Man City boss wants Agger.

Brendan Rodgers may well be ready to accept truly huge offers for Agger, not least because he does appear to have consistent injury concerns, but the Liverpool boss is unlikely to accept less than £20m for his services.
