Dutch international happy at Ajax, for now.
The agent of Newcastle target Gregory van der Wiel has admitted that there is ‘much interest’ in his client – but the full-back himself claims he is focusing on life at Ajax.
Van der Wiel, the Holland international, has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising young right-backs over the last few seasons, attracting interest from the likes of Chelsea, but he has yet to move away from his boyhood club.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has been tipped to make a move for the Dutchman in recent weeks, and Mino Raiola, the player’s representative, has confirmed that clubs have sounded him out over the 24-year-old.
“There is much interest, but nothing has materialised yet,” said Raiola.
Van der Wiel is aware of interest in his availability but insists he is content in Amsterdam.
“It’s not like I’m constantly checking my phone,” he told Dutch newspaper AD.
“That would not be good, because I want to focus on Ajax. I have no idea what my future looks like, but I will see how it goes. I’ll wait. And if a transfer fails to happen, I’ll be happy at Ajax, where I still have a good feeling.”
Both Newcastle and Chelsea have made no secret of their desire to land a new right-back this summer.
While the Toon are reportedly in advanced discussions with Lille over France international Mathieu Debuchy, Chelsea are thought to be closing in on Marseille’s Cesar Azpilicueta, after a brieft flirtation with Debuchy and Maicon of Inter.
But both deals appear to be stalling, with the two Ligue 1 clubs determined to get top-dollar for their prized assets.
Judging from the comments above, it looks as if both Premier League giants are eyeing Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel as a potential alternative.
The 24-year-old was strongly linked with Chelsea last summer and is one of the most promising players in the Eredivisie. Despite claiming to be happy at Ajax, he would surely welcome a move to the Premier League and might be a more affordable alternative to Debuchy and Azpilicueta.
