Arsenal are set to name centre-half Thomas Vermaelen as club captain after the departure of Robin van Persie to Man United.

Vermaelen was vice-captain last season and the club is expected to announced in the next 48 hours that he will replace the outgoing Dutchman.

It is understood that Mikel Arteta and Bacary Sagna were both considered by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger but the French tactician decided to opt for Vermaelen, who – when fit – is a mainstay in the Gunners’ defence.

While Vermaelen’s leadership has never been questioned, the defender has suffered from persistent injury problems and spent most of last season on the sidelines.

The 26-year-old joined Arsenal from Ajax in 2009 and has made 67 league appearances, scoring an impressive in the past three seasons.

Vermaelen was named vice-captain when van Persie stepped up following Cesc Fabregas’ departure to Barcelona last summer.

With van Persie set to sign for United for £24m, Gunners fans will be hoping they do not lose Vermaelen next August.
