Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has admitted he is interested in signing Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and Stoke’s Kenwyne Jones.

Villa have been linked with a move to Defoe, who netted England’s winner in Wednesday’s 1-0 friendly win over Italy in Berne.

The 29-year-old is currently Spurs only senior striker but the club are closing in on Emmanuel Adebayor and Fernando Llorente, and Defoe fears being left on the sidelines when the duo arrive.

Trinidad and Tobago striker Jones is also on Lambert’s radar and the Scot has said it is a case of ‘wait and see’ with both players.

“You are talking about two really good players, different types of players there,” Lambert is quoted as saying by Sporting Life.

“I think a club this size will always be linked with players of that ilk.

“I don’t think you ever stop looking for players. You have always got to try and improve.

“Whether they come in or not, we will have to wait and see but any manager will tell you, you are always going to look for players.”

Lambert confirmed that there are no imminent moves for unwanted full-backs Alan Hutton and Stephen Warnock, both of whom have barely featured for Villa during pre-season.

“(Nothing is happening) at the minute. I’ve picked a squad for tomorrow at West Ham that will go and compete and do the very best they can,” added the former Norwich boss.

“I spoke to Stephen and Alan, they know the situation, what is going on.”
