With the Premier League season getting underway on Saturday, Fantasy Football preparations have kicked into overdrive. Fans in pubs, offices and classrooms across the land are making last minute changes to their team.

Whether you’re a wonderkid in your debut fantasy season or an experienced veteran, nothing is more satisfying than beating your mates and proving who really has the best knowledge. The CaughtOffside Guru will be providing weekly tips to help you achieve this dream:

BARGAIN BIN: the start of the campaign provides the best opportunity to find bargain players, before good form prompts a rise in price:

– Joe Allen: at £5.5m Allen is a great deal, especially following his move from Swansea to Liverpool.

– Arouna Kone: scored 15 league goals for unfancied La Liga overachievers Levante last year. He’ll play most games for Wigan and is a snip at £6.5m.

– Mark Noble: still maturing as a player but a regular starter for West Ham. Takes pens and is yours for £5m.

– Michu: he may be playing for Swansea, but the Spaniard thrives in the face of adversity, scoring 15 times from midfield for newly-promoted La Liga outfit Rayo Vallencano last season. The new Gylfi Sigurdsson?

DOUBLE TOP: maximising points is as much about the fixture list as it is players. Keep an eye on teams playing twice in a gameweek, especially as postponements stack up during the season:

– The first gameweek sees Chelsea and Reading play twice. As the only recognised striker at Stamford Bridge, Fernando Torres could be a clever buy. The impressive Ramires will also play most games and is good value at £7m.

– Old skool fans may fancy Reading’s Ian Harte, a £4.5m starter who takes free kicks and pens.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC: Fantasy league titles are often decided by who gets the captain right most often. With double points at stake it is vitally important you predict your high scorers:

– With Man City at home to Southampton, Carlos Tevez could score big. He looked great in the Community Shield and is £2.5m cheaper than compatriot Sergio Aguero.
