Man United Agree £3.9m Deal to Sign Dutch Left-Back Alexander Buttner

Old Trafford side sign Vitesse Arnhem youngster.

De Telegraaf reports that Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Alexander Buttner this week, whose move to Southampton broke down earlier this summer.

Vitesse Arnhem’s Alexander Buttner has revealed that he is set to seal a ‘dream’ move to Manchester United.

Southampton, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers have all made bids for the 23-year-old – but now it appears he is on his way to Old Trafford in a shock move.

Left-back Buttner, who was included in Holland’s preliminary squad for Euro 2012, now appears to be closing on a move to England with the deal reportedly worth €5million (£3.9million).

Speaking to regional tv station Omroep Gelderland Buttner admitted he was about to seal his ‘dream’ move.

“This is really a dream come true,” he said.

“It was all arranged very quickly and of course I am very delighted. Happily everything is coming to an end.”

This is something of a surprise. Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked with moves to bring in a left-back for much of the summer but whilst a lot of talk was of a potential move for Everton defender Leighton Baines it appears that the Old Trafford boss has opted to sign a relative unknown.

Buttner was previously at Ajax as a youth team player but has spent his entire professional career at Vitesse Arnhem, notching up 110 Eredivisie appearances for the GelreDome side. The 23 year old is still be capped by the Dutch international side but was part of Bert Van Marwijk’s provisional 36 man Euro 2012 squad.

Given that Ferguson is seemingly looking for a player to support Patrice Evra and not replace the Frenchman in the short term, maybe a move for an up and coming talent is a wise and cost effective one to make. If Man United did indeed launch a big money move for Baines then clearly the Man United boss will end up with one top talent unhappy about the lack of first team action they are receiving.
