Manchester City Boss Roberto Mancini To Miss Out On Top Transfer Target

De Rossi set to sign new deal at Roma.

Manchester City look to have missed out on the signing of Daniele De Rossi following reports in Italy that the Roma midfielder is set to pledge his long-term future to the club.

De Rossi has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League Champions and Roberto Mancini was hoping to clinch his signature before the end of August.

The Italy international has been one of the star performers for Roma in recent years and was seen as a natural replacement for Nigel De Jong, who is expected to leave City this month.

But Sport Mediaset are reporting that Rossi will hold a press conference on Tuesday where he is expected to officially turn down a move to England and confirm he will be remaining at the Stadio Olimpico.

The news will come as a major blow to Mancini who wants new additions to his squad following their struggle to beat newly promoted Southampton on Sunday.

Daniele De Rossi may well be set to sign a new deal at Roma but will Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini really care?

The Italian tactician has been chasing a versatile holding midfielder (who can also play at centre-half) all summer and has been linked with moves for De Rossi, Javi Martinez and, of course, Jack Rodwell.

Certainly the Premier League Champions were interested in De Rossi at some stage but they have since landed Everton’s 21-year-old star Rodwell and it would be a massive surprise if Mancini attempted to sign De Rossi in the same transfer window, particularly as Nigel de Jong is showing no signs of leaving the Etihad before the end of month.

While Rodwell is much younger and less experienced than the Italian international, he plays the same role and is likely to have a much higher sell-on value and lower wage demands – important factors for City as the board struggles to manage the club in a financially responsible way.

City have surprised everyone with their caution in the transfer market this summer and it looks set to continue, unless they can get the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor off the wage bill sharpish.
