Southampton Set to Complete Ambitious £18m Double Signing

St Mary’s side ready to spend big.

Southampton are close to completing an £18million double deal for Uruguay star Gaston Ramirez and Blackpool’s wantaway Matt Phillips.

Ramirez is ready to talk about a £12m switch from Italian side Bologna after realising that Saints meant business – and with his club discovering there are no bigger bidders.

Liverpool and Tottenham have been among the clubs linked with the skillful attacker, who can play several roles, but Southampton have been the most serious suitors.

And as Saints are flexing their financial muscles, they also plan to close a £6m swoop for fellow forward Phillips, wants the move and has asked to go.

Southampton mean business.

Having seen the South Coast side break their transfer record to sign Jay Rodriguez earlier this summer the Saints are now looking to once again spend big to further improve their squad. Nigel Adkins will be happy to see the club’s owners backing him in the transfer market and if the St Mary’s side manage to land this pair then their chances of avoiding the drop and pushing onwards to mid-table will have significantly increased.

Just making a £12m bid for Gaston Ramirez is a statement of intent and if Southampton do manage to beat other prospective suitors to the talented 21 year old attacking midfielder then they will have pulled off something of a major coup.

The Udinese man is said to have been the subject of genuine interest from Liverpool, who already employ two of Ramirez’s Uruguayan international team-mates, but perhaps the Serie A starlet feels that the chance to play regular first team football would mean a move to Southampton trumps other offers.

Blackpool attacker Matt Phillips has also been chased by a number of top tier sides and the Scottish international is seemingly destined for bigger and better things and may be keen on an instant return to the top flight having been part of the Tangerines squad that was relegated back in 2010/11.

Southampton may be right to strengthen their squad given that they have achieved back to back promotions and may well have to bring in quality additions to improve their chances of retaining their spot in the top tier.

Adkins will have been very pleased with his side’s battling defeat at Man City but will know that getting points on the board is far more important than merely entertaining the neutrals, and this pair could well help convert good performances into tangible rewards.
