The boardmember of the Ligue 1 side has announced that the 22-year-old is not on his way to Stamford Bridge after turning down an offer in the region of £3.2m.
Marseille president Vincent Labrune has refuted claims that defender Cesar Azipilicueta is on the verge of a move to Chelsea.
The full-back has been a long-term target for the Champions League and FA Cup winners as they continue to search for cover in defence.
Aziplicueta was thought to be close to a switch to Stamford Bridge, but Labrune has instead confirmed that the Ligue 1 side have rejected the Blues’ latest offer.
“Last Friday, they [Chelsea] come to us with €4m [£3.2m], but we told them that is not a [good enough] offer,” Labrune told La Marseillaise.
Both Labrune and sporting director Jose Anigo had been spotted in London this week, adding fuel to the fire that an agreement was close regarding the 22-year-old.
It looks as if Roman Abramovic may have finally tightened the purse strings at Stamford Bridge, after early summer spending that topped £70m.
Not only are the Blues baulking at Wigan’s fairly modest £9m asking price for Victor Moses but the mega-rich west Londoners are attempting to land young full-back Cesar Azpilicueta for a paltry £3.2m.
Chelsea are clearly trying to take advantage of Marseille’s financial predicament, after the Ligue 1 club admitted they have to sell the Spanish full-back in order to reduce their hefty wage bill.
But the 21-year-old is a highly-rated under-21 international, who is already experienced beyond his years after breaking into the Osasuna first team as a teenager.
Chelsea are going to have to significantly increase their offer if they want to sign Azpilicueta, with Marseille understood to value him at around the £8.5m mark.
Roberto Di Matteo has been desperate for a right-back all summer, after releasing Jose Bosingwa in June. But the Italian might be a whole lot less concerned after the Blues opening two matches of the season, after watching auxiliary right-back Branislav Ivanovic score in both!
