DONE DEAL: Sunderland Complete £12m Deal to Sign Wolves Striker Steven Fletcher

Scot joins Black Cats.

Sunderland have completed the signing of striker Steven Fletcher from Wolverhampton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old has signed a four-year deal on Wearside and goes straight into the squad for tomorrow’s home opener against Reading.

He becomes Martin O’Neill’s third signing of the summer following the acquisitions of Carlos Cuellar and Louis Saha.

O’Neill told safc.com: “It has been no secret that we needed to strengthen our attacking options and Steven has a proven track record of scoring goals.

“He is young and constantly improving and he will be a very welcome addition to the squad. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring him to Sunderland.”

The Scottish international began his career with Hibernian, scoring 52 goals in 189 appearances.

With a fee that could rise as high as £14m, Wolves had pulled off another piece of stunning business. Earlier on Friday, the Molineux outfit sold Matt Jarvis to West Ham for £10.75, meaning the club have now raised £24m in half a day. Not bad going for two players who both spent a fair amount of time on the bench last saeson.

Fletcher’s price is certainly surprising. Fletcher may have scored more headed goals than anyone else in the Premier League last season but is he really worth the same as Santi Cazorla or ten Michus?

Regardless of his price, Black Cats boss Martin O’Neill will be delighted to have new striker on board, after losing the services of Niklas Bendtner and Asamoah Gyan last season.

Fletcher scored 12 Premier League goals last season for bottom-club Wolves, more than any other Sunderland player managed. There is a compelling argument that with better service (perhaps from Adam Johnson), he will flourish this season.

As for Wolves, the club must now hand boss Stale Solbakken a large chunk of this windfall to allow the new boss the best chance of rebuilding the squad and gaining bouncing back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
