Liverpool Within ‘Touching Distance’ Of Surprise Chelsea Youngster Signing

Anfield side keen on Stamford Bridge attacker.

Liverpool set to renew Sturridge interest

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is set to make another move to bring Daniel Sturridge to Anfield – with a deal for Chelsea forward believed to be within touching distance at last.

Sources close to the Reds have told ESPN that Rodgers has been pursuing Sturridge all summer, with the glut of attacking midfield signings at Chelsea this summer pushing the Team GB Olympic star down the pecking order of Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo.

Liverpool have long been linked with interest in Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge and this source believes the chase is back on and that the Anfield side are within ‘touching distance’ of securing a deal to snap up the England international. Of course ‘within touching distance’ could mean anything but it does seem plausible that the former Man City man could be considering his future ever since Roberto Di Matteo was appointed as Blues boss on a permanent basis.

The Italian didn’t appear to show as much faith in the adaptable attacker as former boss Andre Villas-Boas, leaving Sturridge out of his starting eleven for both encounters with Barcelona as well as the FA Cup and Champions League finals. A move to Liverpool may therefore interest the youngster as it could mean securing regular first team football.

Liverpool could of course do with boosting their firepower, especially as Andy Carroll’s future at the Merseyside club is very much far from certain. Rodgers offloaded veteran Craig Bellamy so currently the Northern Irishman can call upon consistent Uruguayan Luis Suarez, new signing Fabio Borini, the aforementioned Carroll and youngster Raheem Sterling. This would not appear to be enough experienced options with which to mount a chase for a top four finish.

Sturridge was used in a wide attacking role by Villas-Boas, a role that is said to not be the player’s preferred position, but nonetheless a role that the Blues forward excelled in, with the Birmingham born player netted 13 goals in all competitions last term as well as providing a decent number of assists.

If Di Matteo continues bringing in new additions this summer and one of those turns out to be another striker, then perhaps advances for Sturridge would be considered.
