Madjeski Stadium side want Upton Park forward.
Reading are preparing to move for West Ham striker Carlton Cole in what would be one of their most-expensive transfers ever.
Brian McDermott’s Royals have opened talks to land the England target man, who is available from Sam Allardyce’s club following their own summer spending spree.
The Russian-backed Premier League new boys will pay a fee rising to £5million for Cole, as well as picking up his salary – which is close to another £3m a season.

Reading boss Brian McDermott may feel he needs another striking option before the transfer window slams shut but one wonders if West Ham are willing to allow Carlton Cole to leave to join the Royals. Whilst the England international is by no means a prolific marksman he is a regular in Sam Allardyce’s first team plans and the Hammers boss won’t be ready to listen to offers for the 28 year old unless he has a replacement in the bag.
The Upton Park boss did of course push hard in his chase for Liverpool forward Andy Carroll but that move didn’t pan out and though Allardyce did bring in Modibo Maiga in from Sochaux, Carlton Cole could yet be a key player at the East London club this season.
McDermott’s side have seemingly been fine front of goal in their first two games of the season, netting three times, including twice at Stamford Bridge.
Cole netted 15 goals in all competitions last term and has 57 goals in total for West Ham in 209 appearances.
