Toon eyeing Dutchman.
Newcastle will have to fight off interest from French club Paris St Germain to land Gregory van der Wiel after the player’s representative revealed that he was negotiating the full-back’s exit from Ajax.
Van der Wiel, 24, featured for Holland at the 2010 World Cup and the recent European Championships, and is regarded as one of the most exciting young right-backs on the continent.
Chelsea were heavily linked with the Dutchman, but their recent move for Cesar Azpilicueta appears to have ended their interest in the Dutchman.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, who has already indicated his desire to strengthen his squad, is thought to be monitoring Van der Wiel, and he could be encouraged to make a bid after the 24-year-old’s agent Mino Raiola confirmed he had entered negotiations with several clubs.
“I am in talks with many clubs but there is nothing concrete,” Raiola told Dutch newspaper AD.
However, Pardew will face stiff competition to secure van der Wiel’s signature as PSG, who have already spent £119m this summer, are tipped to make the full-back their latest summer recruit.
Newcastle appear to have abandoned attempts to land Lille full-back Mathieu Debuchy, switching instead to Dutch international Gregory van der Wiel of Ajax.
The Toon are desperate to add a new right-back to their squad before the close of the transfer window and France defender Debuchy was previously their top target. The 26-year-old was convinced to snub interest from Chelsea by current Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who played with Debuchy for the Ligue 1 club and is also a Les Bleus teammate.
Even though Lille have already signed a replacement for Debuchy, they are unwilling to budge on their £12m valuation and, with thrifty Newcastle unwilling to pay it, the clubs have been locked in an unproductive stalemate.
Magpies boss Alan Pardew appears to have finally lost patience with Lille and is preparing to move for van der Wiel instead. The talented 24-year-old has also previously been linked with Chelsea and considered one of the best young defenders in the Eredivisie.
But if the Toon are unwilling to cough up for Debuchy, how on earth are they going to compete with PSG for van der Wiel? The Parisiens are perhaps the wealthiest club in the world and have already spend over £150m this summer.
Newcastle have already landed one promising Dutchman in Vernon Anita this summer and if they can beat the French club to van der Wiel, they will have completed a real coup.
