Afellay can leave Barca on loan.
Ibrahim Afellay’s agent, Rob Jansen, has revealed that the Netherlands international is likely to leave Barcelona on a temporary basis this summer.
The former PSV star appears to be surplus to requirements at the Catalan side and was left out of the match-squad for the 2-1 win over Osasuna at the weekend.
Therefore, Afellay is keen to move on in order to get regular first-team football elsewhere, and a loan move seems to be on the horizon.
“He has the qualities to succeed at Barcelona, but endured a setback with his injury. It might therefore be better to try and get more playing time elsewhere. We’re currently in the process of looking into the possibilities,” Jansen stated to Studio Voetbal.
“We are talking about a loan move here. It all depends on Barcelona, though. They decide where their players are going. There are a number of clubs that are very concrete. We are in talks with several clubs.”
Afellay joined Barcelona from PSV in January 2011, but a serious knee injury prevented him from making an impact last season.
North London rivals Spurs and Arsenal are likely to be two of the clubs in talks to sign Barcelona winger Ibrahim Afellay on loan.
The duo have been tracking the Netherlands international for some time but earlier in the summer it looked likely that Afellay would remain at Nou Camp.
Clearly that situation has changed and the 25-year-old will be keen to find a new club before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the week.
Afellay has been unlucky in Catalonia. After a strong start to his Barca career, the playmaker suffered a serious injury and has been forced to watch from the sidelines as the likes of Cristian Tello have moved above him in the pecking order.
But the talented former PSV midfielder proved his fitness at Euro 2012, playing every group game as the Netherlands crashed out after the group stage.
Afellay remains a huge talent and would be a great signing for either one of the north London duo, while Liverpool might also be interested after missing out on Tello.
Arsenal are in the market for a new winger, with Andrei Arshavin set to leave the club, while Spurs have been tracking Willian of Shakhtar and may regard Afellay as a cheaper option.
