Tottenham Reject Chance To Sign Roma ‘Keeper, With Lloris Switch Getting Closer

Spurs turn down chance to sign Dutchman

Tottenham have been offered Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg – but turned down the chance to sign him, according to reports in Italy.

Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport says Roma have placed the Holland international on the transfer list for sporting reasons and offered him to Spurs, who rejected the chance to make a bid.

Andre Villas-Boas has had his sights on French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as he looks for a long-term successor to Brad Friedel.

And after Spurs’ snub Fulham could now be favourites to buy Stekelenburg instead, who has 50 caps for the Dutch national team.

The news that Spurs have rejected the chance to sign Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg seems unsurprising given the club are on the verge of sealing the signing of France number on Hugo Lloris.

The north Londoners are evidently in the market for a new custodian this summer, with ageing stars Brad Friedel, 41, and Carlo Cudicini, 38, past their best and Heurelho Gomes untrusted.

New head-coach Andre Villas-Boas wants to play a high defensive line which requires a ‘keeper quick out of his goal, who can almost operate as a sweeper.

Clearly Lloris, 25, fits the bill better than the current 30-somethings and the French captain has the chance to cement the number one jersey at White Hart Lane for the next ten years or so.

However, Stekelenburg remains a talented stopper with plenty of international experience so it seem surprising that Roma are willing to let him go.
