Tottenham To Up Offer For Willian, As Jermaine Jenas Nears Sunderland Switch

One in, one out at White Hart Lane.

Shakhtar Donetsk have rejected Tottenham’s £11.8million bid for Willian.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy met senior officials at the club last weekend and is planning another offer for the 24-year-old.

Willian last week begged his Ukrainian club not to block a move to White Hart Lane, saying: “Everyone knows that I want out, I’m here for five years, won many titles, so I hope they respect my will.

“I do not regret coming here, but this situation has been happening, with Chelsea trying to get me in January and now Tottenham, we start to rethink.”

Sunderland are in talks to sign Jermaine Jenas from Tottenham, has learned.

Martin O’Neill kick-started his summer recruitment drive with the signings of Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher – from Manchester City and Wolves respectively – last week and has now turned his attention to prising Jenas from White Hart Lane.

It is now increasingly likely that Jenas will move to Wearside before the transfer window closes on Friday, although it has not yet been decided if it will be a permanent move or a season-long loan.

O’Neill is keen to add Jenas’ experience and proven quality to his ranks and has also targeted the midfielder’s club colleague Danny Rose on loan.

A worrying pattern is emerging at White Hart Lane: new head-coach Andre Villas-Boas seems intent on shipping out many of the Premier League proven, English players on the club’s books, leaving the squad looking rather thin on the ground.

We’re not suggesting that Brazilian forward Willian is not an upgrade on Jermaine Jenas – he clearly is. But AVB’s willingness to allow Michael Dawson and Tom Huddletsone to leave White Hart Lane, along with Jenas and Danny Rose, should set alarm bells ringing amongst Spurs fans.

Dawson, Jenas and Huddlestone all had injury hit campaigns last season but the trio are proven Premier League performers, whose talents has been acknowledged with England recognition.

While they are unlikely to make the first team at White Hart Lane, modern football is a squad game and the Premier League season is long and gruelling. Harry Redknapp appeared to pay the price for a lack of rotation at Spurs last season, as a tired looking side limped to fourth despite being in a commanding position for third place in February.

AVB and chairman Daniel Levy have already shipped out Croatian trio Luka Modric, Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka this summer, plus Steven Pienaar and Sebastien Bassong.

Further sales of the likes of Dawson and Huddlestone would leave Spurs lacking depth, particularly if they fail to land targets Moussa Dembele of Fulham and Yann M’Vila of Rennes.

That said, Willian would be an exciting signing and could provide good competition for Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale.
