Chelsea And Tottenham To Miss Out On Hulk, As Russians Near £39m Deal

No Premier League teams could match Porto’s asking-price, says source.

Zenit St Petersburg look set to clinch the signature of Porto striker Hulk, with Premier League clubs having been priced out of a proposed €50 million transfer.

Hulk, 26, has long been linked with a switch to Chelsea, but Porto’s asking price – in excess of £40 million – has proved a stumbling block.

It now appears Russian side Zenit will land the Brazil international. A source told ESPN: “Despite all the rumours and speculation, no English clubs were bidding for Hulk – he was far too expensive.

“Zenit will pay a minimum of €50 million. The fee might be as high as €60 million. I expect it will go ahead in the next 24 hours, but no English club was prepared to come anywhere near to that figure.”

After a summer of speculation linking Brazilian forward Hulk with a Premier League move, the striker looks destined to pocket a wheelbarrow load of cash and join Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg.

Chelsea have been linked with Hulk the longest. The 26-year-old was reportedly being lined-up as a replacement for Didier Drogba before the Ivorian had left Stamford Bridge and Porto star even admitted that he was keen to join the European Champions.

Then there were reports linking him with a surprise move to Tottenham, sparked, most probably, by a picture of the powerful left-footer chatting to Spurs head-coach Andre Villas-Boas in a hotel during the Olympics.

After all that, Zenit were the only team who stumped up the mega £39m asking-price. For Spurs this kind of money was never a possibility, even with the cash from Luka Modric’s sale, and even Chelsea might have been reluctant to pay that much for a player who is yet to test himself in one of the top European leagues.

That said, Hulk has a staggering 54 goals in 98 league games for Porto and looked good for Brazil during this summer’s Olympics.

Both London clubs undoubtedly move onto other targets a while ago and both will be hoping to land a striker before Friday’s deadline. Chelsea have started the season brilliantly but, at present, look overly reliant on Fernando Torres, while Spurs boast just two senior strikers in Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe.

Sadly for the Premier League, neither is set to land Hulk.
