Hamburg Desperate To Re-Sign Tottenham Forward Rafa Van Der Vaart

Germans keen on VDV.

Hamburg are planning to do everything possible to bring their former player Rafael van der Vaart back to the Imtech Arena from Tottenham before the transfer window closes.

Van der Vaart has been strongly linked with a return to his old club, where he spent three seasons between 2005-08 before moving to Real Madrid.

But the Bundesliga side’s chairman, Carl-Edgar Jarchow, admits time is running out to convince Spurs to sell.

“There is not a lot of time – it is really up to Tottenham Hotspur,” he told Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

“If we have a chance to sign him, we will do everything we can to make that happen.”

That opportunity could present itself if Tottenham complete the signing of some of their own targets during what looks set to be another frantic final 48 hours of a summer transfer window at White Hart Lane.

If Tottenham coach Andre Villas-Boas is really willing to offload Rafa van der Vaart, then he needs his head examining.

Granted the Dutchman is 29 and his legs have gone slightly, but ex-Ajax man is a winner and a leader.

Gylfi Sigurdsson may well turn out to play more this season but van der Vaart brings experience of competing at the top level, having played for Real Madrid and in a World Cup Final for the Netherlands – crucial if Spurs are to mount a push for the top four.

He is also capable of those moments of genius and his goals – he has 25 in two seasons for Spurs – always seem to come at key moments, rather than when the side are already 2 or 3 nil up.

Spurs are already desperately lacking forwards (they only have Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe on their books) and selling VDV would leave them suddenly very reliant on their limited front-line plus the aforementioned Sigurdsson and Gareth Bale for goals.

New signing Moussa Dembele is not the answer. The Belgian scored just 7 times in 70 odd appearances for Fulham.

While it is good to see Villas-Boas clearing out the dead wood like Sebastien Bassong (with others set to follow), selling VDV would be a mistake and would leave Spurs short of a great player in a crucial area.
