Newcastle United Target Andy Carroll Wants To Stay At Liverpool And Fight For His Place

Carroll to scupper Rodgers’ transfer plans.

Andy Carroll wants to stay at Anfield and fight for his place despite Liverpool’s attempts to move him on before the transfer window closes.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has tried to persuade the striker to accept his time at the club is over as he attempts to raise funds for new signings.

ut Carroll remains committed to Liverpool, having already turned down one proposed move to West Ham.

Newcastle’s offer to take Carroll on a season-long loan remains on the table.

Liverpool must raise funds in order to step up their interest in Fulham forward Clint Dempsey, while Arsenal’s Theo Walcott also remains a target.

Andy Carroll’s determination to fight for his place at Anfield is admirable. Clearly the hulking centre-forward doesn’t want to be remembered as the most expensive flop in British football history or look back on his career at Liverpool with regret.

But the 23-year-old’s stubborn resolve not to be forced out of the club could scupper boss Brendan Rodgers’ plans for the new season.

Rodgers has publicly backed Carroll for most of the summer, despite consistent reports that the former Newcastle striker does not feature in his long-term vision for the club.

But the Northern Irish tactician finally broke ahead of Thursday’s Europa League game with Hearts (which Carroll will not feature in), admitting that the striker was merely a ‘cover player’ and dropping the biggest hint yet that the club want to sell him.

After the disastrous spending of Rodgers’ predecessor Kenny Dalglish – epitomised by Carroll -, the former Swansea boss has been told to sell before he can buy.

With Liverpool keen to sign Theo Walcott from Arsenal, Fulham’s Clint Dempsey and a holding midfielder before Friday evening, the club desperately needs to offload Carroll sharpish.

The only way the England international is likely to depart is if Newcastle launch a late bid to re-sign him and the Toon have made it clear they favour a loan deal and are not willing to match Liverpool’s asking price.

All the signs point to Carroll staying on Merseyside. Admirable yes, but for Rodgers, very disappointing news.
