DONE DEAL: Southampton Snare Promising Japanese Defender

Saints sign centre-half.

Southampton have completed the signing of Japanese centre-back Maya Yoshida from Dutch side VVV-Venlo.

The 24-year-old has cost the south cost outfit in the region of £2m and is has signed a three-year deal at St Mary’s.

Boss Nigel Adkins told the club’s official website: “We are delighted to bring in Maya to the Club and are looking forward to working with him here at Southampton.”

Yoshida captained his country at this summer’s Olympic Games where he caught the eye of a number of Premier League scouts.

The defender has also been included in the full Japan squad for the friendly with UAE on September 6 and the World Cup qualifier with Iran five days later.

Yoshida began his career in his native Japan with Nagoya Grampus before moving moving to the Eredivisie outfit in 2010.

Since then, he has made over 50 appearances for the Dutch side, scoring five times.

Saints are enjoying a busy end to the transfer window and also completed the signing of young striker Emmanuel Mayuka from Swiss side Young Boys on Wednesday.
